The Victorian pram which provided the wheels for the Vinegar bus

Description

This pram was owned by James and Annie Sarah Welch, who lived at Spring Villa, Church Street, Market Lavington in the late 1880's. It was used for both of their children, Dorothy and James Frank. When the children out-grew the pram , the wheels were removed and the basket stored in the attic of Spring Villa. The wheels were probably fixed to a wooden box to create a 'go-cart' for the children to play with. The family referred to the home-made go-carts as 'vinegar buses' as the boxes used had contained bottles of vinegar when delivered to local shops. In the late 1970's, Tony Welch, the grandson of James and Annie Sarah, moved into the house. Mr Welch gave the pram to his sister, the curator of Market lavington Museum. Replacement wheels were attached to the frame. Although the wheels are not contemporary with the basket, they are considered to be an important addition as they represent the objects more recent history.
